Google Business Profile suspended: the reinstatement route, in order

Appeal through Google's appeals tool, which names the guideline you are said to have broken -- but fix the underlying problem before you file, because the appeal is reviewed against the profile as it stands, and do not create a replacement profile while a review is open.

6 min read

A suspended Business Profile removes you from Google Maps and from the place in Search where customers were finding you, usually with no warning and an email that names a policy rather than a fact. The route back is published and it is free. What follows is Google's process, and then the two mistakes that turn a recoverable suspension into a long one.

The published route

  • Open Google's appeals tool while signed into the Google account that manages the profile. The wrong account is the most common reason people conclude the tool is broken.
  • Read which guideline Google says was breached. This is the only reliable information you will get about the cause, and the rest of your appeal should address that specific thing rather than argue generally that you are a real business.
  • Prepare evidence. Google suggests business registration, licences, tax certificates or utility bills, and is explicit that the documents should match the business name and address on the profile.
  • Submit. Google reviews and emails a decision, which may be approved, denied, or ineligible for appeal.

Do not create a second profile

Google states directly that you should not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review. It is the intuitive move when your listing vanishes and revenue is walking away, and it is the one that turns a single suspension into a duplicate-listing problem sitting on top of it. Wait the review out.

Fix first, then appeal -- our view, not Google's rule

Google does not tell you to remediate before appealing. We do, and the reasoning is the same as every other appeal route: your appeal is read against the profile as it currently stands, so an appeal filed against an unchanged profile asks a reviewer to overlook something that is still there. If the named guideline concerns your business name, your address, your categories or your hours, correct it, then file. You do not get an unlimited supply of reviews.

What an appeal cannot do

It cannot make an ineligible business eligible. If the profile represents something Google's guidelines do not accept a listing for -- an address you do not staff, a business that does not serve customers at that location, a lead-generation front for someone else's service -- the suspension is describing a structural problem and no volume of documents resolves it. The honest answer there is to change the underlying arrangement or accept that this surface is not available to you.

It also cannot remove accurate negative information about you. That is a different problem with different routes, and anyone offering to make true reporting disappear is selling something that either fails or damages you further.

While you wait

A suspension is a good moment to notice how much of your discoverability sat in one place you do not own. Your own site, the profiles you control, and independent listings and coverage all keep working while a Business Profile is gone, and the businesses that survive a suspension calmly are the ones that were not depending on a single surface. Rebuild toward that regardless of how the appeal lands.
