Action blocks, link limits and messaging restrictions: what triggers them and how they clear
Most restrictions people call a shadowban are rate limits, integrity action blocks or link trust scoring, and only some of them have an appeal route at all.

Almost every partial restriction gets described as a shadowban, and almost none of them are one. The label matters because the routes out are different, and two of the categories below have no appeal route at all, which means anyone charging you to appeal them is charging you to file into nothing.
The five things people mean by shadowban
- Rate limiting: you moved too fast. Follows, unfollows, likes, comments or messages above the threshold for your account age and history. Temporary, self clearing, no appeal needed and none available.
- Integrity action blocks: the system believes the behaviour pattern is automated or inauthentic. Usually shows a specific block notice with a date. Sometimes appealable through the in app prompt.
- Link trust scoring: your links stop working or stop being clickable because the destination domain has poor trust signals, not because your account did anything. This is the one people diagnose wrongest.
- Community standards strikes: an actual policy enforcement with a record on your account status page. Appealable, with a published route.
- Recommendation demotion: your content is still visible to followers but is not eligible for recommendation surfaces. Governed by separate recommendation guidelines, and generally not appealable because it is not an enforcement.
Check the record before you theorise
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok all expose an account status surface showing whether you have active enforcements and whether your content is eligible for recommendation. Look at it first. A large proportion of suspected shadowbans turn out to be an empty record and a content problem, and a smaller but real proportion turn out to be a strike the account holder never saw.
The usual triggers
Third party automation and scheduling tools with broad permissions. Follow and unfollow cycles. Identical outbound messages at volume, which is the fastest route to a messaging restriction. Linking to a domain with a poor reputation, including shorteners and any domain that has been reported. Reposting content that carries another creator's watermark. And on TikTok, live and monetisation eligibility rules that are stricter than the ordinary content rules.
How to clear each one
Rate limits clear by stopping. Nothing else works, and continuing to poke at the limit extends it. Action blocks clear the same way plus removing whatever automation is connected. Link blocks clear by fixing or changing the destination domain, not by changing anything about the account. Strikes clear on appeal where the appeal has merit, and otherwise age out on the platform's own schedule. Recommendation demotion clears when the content changes.
Where paid help is worth it
Where there is a real strike with an appealable route and commercial exposure attached, or where you cannot work out which of the five you have and the guesswork is costing you reach. What you are buying is diagnosis and a properly built appeal, not an override.
